Sources and method

The radar is RainViewer's global composite, which brings together national radar networks: NEXRAD in the United States, the DWD in Germany, the Met Office in the United Kingdom, the JMA in Japan, the BOM in Australia, and others. A new image is published every ten minutes. Regions without ground radar, the oceans in particular, stay empty: no colour there means “no measurement”, not “no rain”.

Each pixel is brought back to its reflectivity, in dBZ, then classed into six intensities, from drizzle (10 dBZ) to likely hail (60 dBZ and above). Rates in millimetres per hour follow the Marshall and Palmer relation used by national radar networks; they are indicative, since a radar measures what raindrops reflect, not what reaches the ground. Below 10 dBZ, echoes are too weak to be rain on the ground and are not drawn. The image is reprojected to fit the sphere: laid on it as RainViewer publishes it, in Mercator projection, it would push rain towards the poles.

City weather comes from Open-Meteo, which combines the models of national weather services. Both sources are called by our servers, never from your browser: the radar image is rebuilt once per publication and served to every visitor, city weather is cached for 15 minutes. These readings are informative and are neither a forecast nor a safety notice.
